Selva, I understand what you're saying here. A couple of points.

1. I DO NOT monitor my DM's at all. If anyone wants to reach me on Twitter it has to be through RT's. I found there is just too much spam with DM's.

2. You are always going to get negative feedback no matter how good your intentions. I must say I rarely get them, but I have had them. And I just ignore them. Heck even Jesus Christ got negative feedback and he had the purist intentions of anyone. People will always find something to gripe about.

3. I engage in both community interaction and marketing on Twitter and I do it like an out of control steam train. I now have just under 300,000 followers to which I am posting to every 30 mins, 24 hours per day. They get my marketing, full stop. But I also engage in communication with my followers my using Seesmic Desktop. Now do you think I get much negative feedback with that much marketing. I get hardly any. That's the truth. It just depends on how you market.

4. I believe that people have the freedom of choice and that they have the freedom to exercise that choice. They can opt out anytime they like. Anything else is just plain whining and winging and I ain't having anything to do with it.

That's it. I hope that helps. Conclusion... keep moving forward and don't be moved by the opinions and comments of others.

Greg

I have a question on something that wasn't covered in this article. So, I understand that you have the choice to follow and unfollow people if you aren't interested in receiving DMs or seeing their tweets, but what about when someone that you don't know tweets you and offers you a service. This service could be free or not.

I'll give an example. I give free Spanish and English classes every weekend online. Anyway, I search for people who have tweeted something like, "I really need to learn Spanish." or "I'm failing Spanish. I need a tutor ASAP!" Then I send them a tweet either telling them about my free class or offering to tutor them for a fee through skype. Am I spamming?

I personally like it when others respond to my needs on Twitter. For example, I posted that I needed a logo and a guy @ messaged me offering me his services. I didn't find it offensive or spammy, but a business listening to the need of a potential customer.

I thought I was helping people and hadn't considered myself a spammer at all until the other day a teenage girl replied to me, "Shut up." That got me thinking that maybe I was bothering people. However, because she was so rude I told her that she could go private on Twitter if she didn't want to receive messages from people that she didn't allow to follow her. What do you all think?

That is a challenge to build relationships with 1,000 followers. Twitter is a way to find people with similar interests (Ning.com is better for that) and to give tidbits of information...maybe say something off the wall...or find interesting articles to read. Yes...a way to promote a new service/product in a short blurb. Actually, Twitter is really good in helping businesses to learn how to create an effective and punchy advertisement that gets attention..instead of a "wordy" explanation of what you offer. Most people want to read something that automatically gets their attention. Now, I will have to say that many of us are not too interested in when you walked your dog..unless someone is really into dogs and want to know more about your dog. Really, Twitter is great...but, building relationships will come from active conversation via email/phone/in person...and not by 140 words. Twitter is a good jumping post to start networking.

Everyone would have a legitimate argument about Twitter, if they paid for it. Until you pay for it, then we have to just work with the tools that it gives us to delete the unwanted marketing. For the time being, Twitter is free, so businesses will market. What many of us do not see is that Social Media is a prime tool for business marketing now..and it will grow and grow. Many small businesses, like what I have, are able to be more personal and accessible to potential supporters and clients..and that involves promoting who we are and what we do a lot. Marketing is a 24/7 activity....if you want a business to succeed..you have to market..not just one time a day, not just two times, but a lot. Now that marketing can come in different forms, and tweeting relentless marketing messages with no personality in it can turn a lot of people off. This new century will experience a lot of growing pains because the new media is changing how we do business and with what tools.

It is about social, but social is the new "doing business" nowadays. Social media is now a major tool in doing business, and especially small businesses are getting online and building up their profile. Now, if we don't like the advertising, then we have the freedom to unfollow. Also, what do we expect in a "free service". Twitter is free, so...we everyone joins, and that includes those who market. I would rather that the marketing was a little more sophisticated, but again, it is a free service..so I have to stop griping about it and just click a button. I think that we in this new age of innovation have gotten a little soft, where anything offends us...but, we forget that "Free" comes with a price tag. If I subscribe to a service and I am paying for it, then I deserve better service...and more exclusivity. Are we willing to pay for online entertainment and media then.....if not, then we will continue getting less exclusivity, and less of all the things that we really want.

Greg: I agree with you. Anytime you have a social media/public media, you will have people promoting something. Social media has becoming a major tool for doing business, especially since individuals who create small businesses now can build relationships with the public instead of being an anonymous entity. What is going on with some people who are so against advertising on Twitter is that they are not happy until they get exactly what they want. They have to understand that when something is "free", you can not get everything that you want. Twitter is a free service, so you have to deal with it. Everyone can get on Twitter..so you have to deal with that too. You can delete them from following you, and that is the solution. What I see is spoiled behavior, and people who just want someone to "hold their hand", and baby them. We have the freedom to follow or unfollow...so we need take control of that freedom and stop griping. I promote arts and entertainment events I have online that are free, even though I do have fee-based services...I don't bombard people with endless marketing messages, they know who I am, and I am proud to be a business owner...in fact, this country was built on small business and marketing...we have so much advertising on TV..and that same advertising pays the bills...if there were not ads on tv, then guess what....you just won't be able to see your favorite show. We pay for cable, but we still receive ads on our favorite networks. So, people really need to get a grip..not everyone wants to know that "you are walking your dog", or "taking a bath"...some really do want to find valuable information that can help them, even if it does come with a marketing pitch.

Christi
Twitter: Pmerric

When I follow someone, I expect content. So yeah, it can get "spammy" if all they're doing is tweeting out "opportunities". But you're also right - just hit the "unfollow" and there you go. A good way to get lots of "unfollows" is to act, well, spammy!
